Inevitably, when someone finds out that I have a bit of an art habit, they say something like, "Oh I would love to have talent like that but I can't even draw a stick figure." I respond to this with a "Thank You" because I feel it is really a compliment. When this exchange happens,I have often tried to get people to think about the following.
If you want to become a painter, or anything else for that matter, the most important thing to have is an open mind and an ability to shut down the "you can't do that" narrative that is going on inside your head when you pick up an artistic tool of any type. This is your ego in protection mode. Protecting you from failure by not taking a shot at all.
All art is one line at a time. None complicated or terribly difficult to execute by themselves assuming basic knowledge of how to operate the tool. Through a series of easy tasks you arrive at a finished piece made up of all these easy little marks.
In an era where there are hundreds of thousands of art instruction videos out there, free on you tube, it has never been easier. So If you truly desire to be creative, You can do amazing things in a very short period of time. This goes for virtually any activity you always wanted to be good at.
The Price of admission is the ability to shut down the "no" narrative in your head. It really is that simple.
